Medical Coder – Hospital Based
and Physician Based
Medical Coders assign specific codes for diagnoses and procedures performed
on a patient and documented in the patient’s health record. They
code symptoms, diseases, operations, and treatments according to national
classification systems. A medical coder is someone who has a sound understanding
of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, likes to work with
numbers and is detail oriented.
Work Environment:
Employment is found in hospitals, physicians’ offices, managed
care organizations, surgical centers, or insurance companies. Medical
coders working in hospital settings require advanced instruction.
Job Outlook:
Demand for experienced coders is expected to be above average because of the importance of accuracy in coding and reimbursement.
Licensure/Certification:
Although certification is provided by professional organizations unrelated
to this Program, this curriculum will provide the strong theoretical
foundation needed for it.
Salary:
Entry salaries up to $16.00 per hour based on qualifications and prior
health related experience.
Program Offerings:
The Medical Coding -Physician-Based Program is designed to prepare individuals
for diagnostic and procedural coding positions in physician-based service
settings such as clinics, physician offices, managed care organizations
and surgical centers. The Certificate Program includes theoretical and
laboratory instruction on the Phoenix College campus as well as a professional
practice affiliation in an area health care setting.

Block Transfer for Health Professions:
As a student enrolled in Allied Health and Health Professions degrees
and certificate programs at one of the Arizona community colleges, you
have an opportunity to complete your bachelor’s degree through
a statewide pathway. This pathway maximizes the use of your community
college credits towards the degree. To help you understand the pathway
and the route to your degree, use the information that has been prepared
by faculty and advisors from both the community colleges and the Arizona
public universities.
The Arizona public universities and community colleges have established
a unique transfer agreement specifically for the Health Professions
Career programs. Instead of relying on a course-by-course evaluation
of a student’s academic transcript, the faculty agreed that it
would be more appropriate to consider the Associate in Applied Science
(AAS) degrees or Certificates of Completion as “blocks”
for transfer to the university.
