Maricopa Community Colleges

Healthcare Education : Credit by Evaluation

The credit by evaluation program offers students the opportunity to receive credit for courses completed at other regionally accredited universities, colleges, and schools, or within the Maricopa Community Colleges, that match with healthcare courses required in the Maricopa Community Colleges healthcare programs.

A student may complete the appropriate application form and submit it to the ICAN Director to:
1. Request review of his/her credits for equivalency to the Healthcare Core Courses (HCC), or
2. Request review of his/her credits for equivalency to the Maricopa Community Colleges District Nursing Program coursework.

Equivalency review for HCC courses:
The HCC courses are required for entry to most of the healthcare education programs at the Maricopa Community Colleges. These courses train students in core competencies common to most healthcare programs, such as knowledge of the healthcare professions, wellness and safety, workplace behavior, and medical terminology.

We recognize that many students entering the Maricopa Community Colleges healthcare programs have had prior education in healthcare. If you wish to have your prior education reviewed for equivalency to the HCC courses, complete the following steps:

  1. Submit a request to the ICAN Director for review of your coursework. Click one of the following links to print the form to request the equivalency review for HCC courses:  Adobe pdf (148k)  MS Word
  2. Along with your request form, submit a transcript of your prior college coursework. We will accept Xeroxed or unofficial copies of your transcript. An official copy is not required.
  3. Submit a detailed official course description of the content of your coursework. Submit a copy of the course objectives/competencies and a course syllabus.
  4. Mail the form, along with your transcript and course descriptions to the ICAN Director at the address listed on the form.
  5. Credit will be granted only for courses in which you received a grade of C or better.
  6. Once the ICAN Director receives your application form, transcript, and course descriptions, your coursework will be evaluated within approximately 3 weeks.
  7. A letter will be sent to you notifying you of our recommendation.

NOTE: If you have taken your coursework at a regionally accredited institution, you will not need to pay Maricopa Community Colleges tuition to receive transfer credit. If you have taken your coursework at a proprietary school without regional accreditation, you will need to pay tuition to receive credit.

Equivalency review for Nursing Program courses:
The Maricopa Community Colleges District Nursing Program, which prepares students for Nurse Assisting, licensing as a Practical Nurse, and licensing as a Registered Nurse, is available at eight of the ten Maricopa Community Colleges. The program is standardized throughout the District, and each college offers the same nursing curriculum.

We recognize that many students entering the Maricopa Community Colleges’ healthcare programs have had prior education in nursing. An applicant who has successfully completed nursing courses within the past 12 months at a nursing program other than the Maricopa Community College District Nursing Program, is eligible to apply for evaluation of courses for advanced placement. If you meet this qualification and wish to have your prior education reviewed for equivalency to the Maricopa Community College District Nursing Program, please contact your Academic Advisor.
